The final day of the French Ligue 1 brought a mixture of emotions for some of Ghana’s players named in Kwesi Appiah’s 26-man provisonal squad for the World Cup in Brazil.
Marseille’s Andre Ayew rounded up his season with a goal for his club at home at the Stade Velodrome against Guingamp.
The midfielder headed in his sixth goal of the season after connecting a Mathieu Valbuena cross from the left to give his team three points on the last day of the season but the victory was not enough to give Les Phoceens a European place as Nice lost to Lyon by a similar scoreline.
Marseille ended the season in sixth place with 60 points.
Andre Ayew’s younger brother, Jordan, had to deal with a larger slice of disappointment as his Sochaux side were beaten 3-0 at home by Evian Thonon Gaillard who had another Ghanaian, Jonathan Mensah, playing at left back.
The result gave Evian 44 points and survival for another season in the Ligue 1 while Sochaux were sent down to Ligue 2 as they racked up 40 points.
Jordan Ayew was on loan from Olympique Marseille and he is expected to return to his parent club for next season’s campaign.
