Ghana’s First President’s Daughter Eyes Presidential Seat

Samia Nkrumah, the current Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and the daughter of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah hasfor the first time declared her intention to run for Presidency on the CPP’s ticket.

The former Member of Parliament for the Jomoro constituency in the Western Region told  Accra-based Radio XYZ  on Thursday that she was willing to do everything she could to resuscitate her father’s party and so would like to lead the CPP into elections when the right time came.

"…I’ve been interested in becoming an MP for the CPP; I’ve been interested in becoming a Chairperson for the CPP, I’ll do anything to secure more votes for the CPP. Why not? What is stopping us?”

Samia Nkrumah did not specify which year she planned running for the Presidency, but it appeared 2016 was the most likely timeline, "…all options are open,” she said.

"You rule out nothing. Nothing is impossible and nothing is ruled out. All options are opened. What we want is to maximize the chances for the CPP to perform better. Whatever we decide to do will be decided upon collectively and democratically.

"Since my return to Ghana, I came with one intention and that is to reactivate Kwame Nkrumah’s vision.”

The CPP, which was formerly the third political force in Ghana, is currently struggling to retain that status as breakaway Progressive People’s Party (PPP) founded by former CPP strongman, Dr. Kwasi Nduom, is giving the CPP a run for its money.

At the last Presidential polls in December 2012, the PPP polled the third largest votes at 64, 267 against CPP’s 20, 109.
