The fate of 90 remand prisoners, locked up for years at the Sunyani Central Prisons will soon be known under the “Justice for All” programme. The suspects have spent between three and 16 years on remand for various crimes including murder, manslaughter, armed robbery and fraud. An audit of GH¢1.8 billion claims submitted by the Bulk Oil Distribution Companies (BDCs) has stalled because the local banks that finance the BDCs are not co-operating. Ernst and Young, an audit firm, was contracted by the Ministry of Finance in the second week of June 2014 to audit the claims of the BDCs before payment. The government, on June 27, 2014, released GH¢450 million to cover part of its indebtedness to the BDCs, while it awaited the final audit report to settle the balance. {....}

A Greek Oil vessel, MT Fair Artemis, hijacked by pirates off Ghana’s waters in June this year has finally berthed at the Takoradi Port to offload oil. This is according to the Director-General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Mr. Richard Anamoo. The pirates are said to have siphoned 3,500 metric tonnes of crude oil from the vessel into another vessel and voyaged to Benin for sale but luck run out on them and were arrested by the security agencies in that country. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has announced it has received a formal request from Ghana to initiate discussions on an economic programme that could be supported by the IMF. The Deputy Managing Director of the IMF, Min Zhu in a statement said: “The Fund stands ready to help Ghana address the current economic challenges it is facing.” “An IMF team will be sent to Ghana in early September to initiate discussions on a programme,” he added. Ghana may now have recorded her first Ebola case. A Burkinabe man, who had fever and bled from his nose and ears “was brought in dead,” at the Bawku Presby Hospital in Ghana’s Upper East region Friday afternoon. South Sudan refugees residing in a UN camp are living in knee-deep, sewage-contaminated floodwater, forcing some families to sleep standing up so they can hold their children out of the water, an international aid group has said. The Deputy Minister in charge of Tertiary Education, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has expressed optimism that the impasse between the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) over their book and research allowance will be resolved soon. A 22-year-old national of Gabon has been arrested on suspicion of stabbing an Ivorian to death at Weiman in Accra. John Maviane, a student of the Ambassador University College at Lapaz, is believed to have struggled with the 24-year-old Ivorian, Madeleine Josian E. Two soldiers who are alleged to have been arresting people falsely and taking money from them have been apprehended by the Kwabenya Police in Accra.
